3 Possible Reasons Why Your Car's Air Conditioner Is Not Working

The past several days, you may have noticed that your car is not getting as cold as it used to on hot days. If so, there are three possible reasons why your car's air conditioner is no longer working properly:
Refrigerant Level Is Low
One reason why your car's air conditioner is no longer blowing cold air is that the refrigerant level is low. A low level could be caused by one of two reasons.
First, the refrigerant may have dissipated over time. To fix this problem, you simply need to have it refilled. Do not try to do this task yourself, however. Since air conditioning refrigerant poses an environmental hazard, only a certified technician should handle the coolant.
Second, your car's air conditioner compressor or hoses may have a leak. If this is the case, the leak needs to be fixed before more refrigerant added.
Compressor Belt Is Loose or Broken
Another possible problem that is affecting your air conditioner is a loose or broken compressor belt. This belt connects the compressor to your car's engine. When engaged, it activates the compressor to turn your air conditioner on. If the belt is no longer fully wrapped around the compressor's pulley, the compressor will either not work or will operate erratically.
To check the belt, find the pulley attached to the air conditioner's compressor. If it is still attached, wiggle the belt with your gloved hands. If it slips on the pulley, this is likely the problem. The belt will need to be replaced by a mechanic before your air conditioner will work correctly.
Air Conditioner's Compressor Is Failing
If your refrigerant levels are within normal range and the belt is firmly attached to the compressor, the problem may lie with the compressor itself. If the compressor is failing, it will need to be repaired or replaced.
One sign you can look for to determine if the problem with your air conditioner is the compressor is to listen carefully when you turn your car's air conditioner on. If you hear loud clicking or gurgling sounds, these noises mean there could be an issue with the compressor.
Whatever the reason as to why your car's air conditioner is not working, you should not try to fix it yourself. Take your vehicle to an auto AC repair service to have a certified technician diagnose the problem with your air conditioner and discuss with you what needs to be done to resolve the issue so you can once again stay cool while driving around on a hot day.
